چکیده

We give a preliminary perspective on the basic principles and pitfalls of adjustable autonomy and humancentered teamwork. We then summarize the interim results of our study on the problem of work practice modeling and human-agent collaboration in space applications, the development of a broad model of human-agent teamwork grounded in practice, and the integration of the Brahms, KAoS, and NOMADS agent frameworks We hope our work will benefit those who plan and participate in work activities in a wide variety of space applications, as well as those who are interested in design and execution tools for teams of robots that can function as effective assistants to humans.

Supporting Adjustable Autonomy in Agent Systems

Intelligent agents are being designed to assume more responsibility and for more critical tasks. In some systems, it is infeasible to simply “stop” an agent when it is about to or has done the wrong thing. Rather, we want to reduce the agent’s autonomy and give control of the unsatisfactory aspects of the agents task to another agent or person. Adjustable Autonomy (AA) is a solution, meaning th...

Adjustable Autonomy Challenges in Personal Assistant Agents: A Position Paper

The successful integration and acceptance of many multi-agent systems into daily lives crucially depends on the ability to develop effective policies for adjustable autonomy. Adjustable autonomy encompasses the strategies by which an agent selects the appropriate entity (itself, a human user, or another agent) to make a decision at key moments when an action is required. We present two formulat...

Improving adjustable autonomy strategies for time-critical domains

As agents begin to perform complex tasks alongside humans as collaborative teammates, it becomes crucial that the resulting humanmultiagent teams adapt to time-critical domains. In such domains, adjustable autonomy has proven useful by allowing for a dynamic transfer of control of decision making between human and agents. However, existing adjustable autonomy algorithms commonly discretize time...

Human-Agent Teamwork and Adjustable Autonomy in Practice

This paper outlines a preliminary perspective on teamwork and adjustable autonomy in groups involving a mix of humans and autonomous agents. Unlike other approaches to agent teamwork, a humancentered perspective to human-agent interaction is used. The paper describes how we are integrating the Brahms and KAoS agent frameworks in order to model and simulate realistic work situations in space and...

Adjustable Autonomy: A Response

Gaining a fundamental understanding of adjustable autonomy (AA) is critical if we are to deploy multi-agent systems in support of critical human activities. Indeed, our recent work with intelligent agents in the “Electric Elves” (E-Elves) system has convinced us that AA is a critical part of any human collaboration software. In the following, we first briefly describe E-Elves, then discuss AA i...

Toward Trustworthy Adjustable Autonomy in KAoS

Trust is arguably the most crucial aspect of agent acceptability. At its simplest level, it can be characterized in terms of judgments that people make concerning three factors: an agent's competence, its benevolence, and the degree to which it can be rapidly and reliably brought into compliance when things go wrong. Adjustable autonomy consists of the ability to dynamically impose and modify c...
